With his appeal against his last refusal still not resolved, our pal Nikkah-Eshgi has
unleashed another application, only slightly better then the last. We have to go on the attack again! For
more details see our home page feature, but the links are repeated below.
We must let planning know that we really do not want this monstrosity, nor the arrogant
attitude that goes with it.
Details: BH2007/02454, 5-6 Western Road Hove
The application to erect an awful penthouse on top of Norfolk Court has been REFUSED! The reasons
given are that it would amongst other things, be completely at odds with the adjacent listed buildings in Norfolk Square and
would completely destroy the attractive Regency scale and the existing roofline. This is a triumph for conservation!
The application was the second for increasing the scale of this building. We hope it will be the last.

The application to tear down the historic (1881) and rather grand building in Dyke Road and
replace it with bland modern housing has been WITHDRAWN. No reason was given but we think the developer might
have been given notice that erosion of our heritage on this scale was never going to happen.
The application to cram two tiny maisonettes into this space has been REFUSED! We
applaud this decision. Although the original building was demolished years ago the Council are right to insist
that replacement buildings take account of the scale and integrity of the historic environment.

Outstanding Planning Applications |
|
The applications to erect six wind turbines on the roof of Kings House and one on the lawn
in Grand Avenue itself is still outstanding, although the target date for a decision was mid-August. The balance between
an environmentally (and economically) sound proposal and the visual impact of these machines is a difficult one to
get right. There are 3 applications involved: BH2007/02049 Kings House Grand Avenue Hove
BH2007/02050 Grassed area adjacent to Kings House Grand Avenue Hove
BH2007/02048 Kings House Grand Avenue Hove (Listed Building Consent) |
It's a long time since there was anything arty about The Arthouse. Their application for
a late, late license (until 3am weekends, 2am other days) is still in the works. The three-week window for objections
has long gone and we are way past the decision target date of 18 June, but no decision has been posted. Is it possible
that Brighton & Hove are having second thoughts about the number of late night boozers in our area? We hope so!

An application to install an ATM in the shopfront of The Border Store at 2 Western Road has been
APPROVED. In our view there was little to object to but there is already an ATM next door. How many do we need?
To check on the details you need this number: BH2007/02911.
Over the last couple of years there have been a succession of applications to convert the flat
above this shop into 3 tiny 1-bedroom self-contained flats. Finally, they have succeeded, the latest application
has been APPROVED. There is no proposed change to the exterior
so the effect on the rest of us will be negligible. See BH2007/02414.
Mitre House is already the tallest building in Western Road (and one of the ugliest) and
the proposal to add 2 storeys and extend the building to the rear was a monstrous idea! Overshadowing of the
nearby houses would have been a serious problem. Fortunately the application has been REFUSED.
We can breathe easily, until the next time! for details use BH2007/02072
The Lion & Lobster in Sillwood Street put in plans for terraces on the 1st and 2nd floors
to accommodate displaced smokers. Local residents are already upset by street drinking and this
will not really help matters. The application has now been APPROVED. Details: BH2007/02199

This is Planning Creep!
Two years ago the Arthouse was a licensed café, then consent was given for
change of use to a bar, opening until 11pm. Not so bad. In 2006, consent was granted to open until 2am Fridays and
Saturdays, 1am other days. Now it might be 3am! Each change is a small step. The problem is, a bar
that opens until 3am is nothing like a café that serves a glass of wine with the pasta!
Did you know there will be 14 licensed premises in East Brunswick quite soon! And if this
application gets consent they will all want to be open until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays. You can bet on it.
EBRA are incensed at the way this area is turning into a drinking destination for alcohol tourists! What does Brighton & Hove Council think
they are doing to a residential area? We shall be asking them. |
