describing her neighbourhood watch initiatives for
Waterloo Street. Bill will set up liaison between her and Peter Browne
our Neighbourhood Watch Committee Member
and invite Meg Stone to attend our future Committee meetings.
Committee Updates from Street Representatives
The Garden's
Peggy Thomas updated the meeting on the Waterloo Street Community
Garden.
The much promised tap has now been installed outside the Old Market to
aid watering.
Agreement has been reached to ensure Old Market Staff sweep and tidy
the Gardens after they are used for functions.
They have been asked to install cigarette butt containers as other
licensed venues have done. This is being considered
by ‘The Old Market Trust’.
The Old Market has agreed to pay £60 per month for the use of the
Garden This money is to be used for plants and
shrubs.
Kerri Burns updated on Norfolk Square and Gardens.
The condition of the Gardens is greatly improved due to all of Reggie’s
hard work. There are less street drinkers
generally around, and improved police presence. Dogs are still being
walked in the Gardens despite there being a ban.
Environmental Issues
Eleanor Gamper stated that Brunswick Street East is in general tidier
and cleaner. There is an ongoing problem with
Parking, and noise. There is concern over the proposed extension of the
seating arrangements onto the pavement
alongside ‘The Conqueror’. This is being challenged by EBRA and an
outcome is awaited.
Richard Oxford described ongoing problems in Farman Street;
There is still a large amount of late night pedestrian traffic, and
attendant problems.
Residents had hoped to have gates installed at the Western Road end of
the street to deter pedestrian traffic, but this
has been ruled as unsatisfactory by the Local Access Forum, since there
is a public right of way.
The Local Access Forum has also asked that plants in the centre of the
street be removed since these could be
hazardous to pedestrians.
Mark Harris echoed some of Richard’s concerns with regard to noise, and
mentioned increased noise in respect of
‘The Robin Hood Pub’.
The one way system continues to be ignored by many, despite signage
being displayed.
Norfolk Square
EBRA’s petition to reinstate the railings around Norfolk Square is
before the council and moving through the approval and
costing process.
Western Street
Geraldine Diggins updated on Western Street;
There are problems with the new off licence selling alcohol to
intoxicated persons and street drinkers, an increase in fly
tipping, and despite new recycling bins being installed these are not
emptied frequently enough.
Waterloo Street
Hassan Khabbazeh provided updates on Waterloo Street and mentioned that
the road has improved in terms of
cleanliness and lack of incident, however traffic still speeds down the
road, and thus the 20 mph limit would be
welcomed. The one way sytem is ignored on an hourly basis.
20 mph Speed limit for Waterloo Street
This now only requires formal approval from the City Council, and this
should be happening soon.
Susan King mentioned ongoing issues with the traffic ramps and lack of
suggestions as to what to do about them when
traversed by heavy traffic. It is hoped that the 20 m.p.h. will help
reduce the noise.
Subscriptions
Susan King mentioned that subscriptions are due again in April. An
email reminder will be sent out advising
members they can pay either by cheque and posting to Sue King at 64
Waterloo Street, Hove, or by direct payment to
the EBRA bank account. Sue will provide you with the correct details
for doing this.
Both Sue and Bill proposed that the annual subscription should be
increased to £5.00 per household per year. All
present agreed.
Dog Bye Laws
A review of the bye laws is being carried out by Roy Pickard of
Brighton & Hove City Council. Suggestions and ideas
are welcome from the Public by 28/3/08. Please email
roy.pickard@brighton-hove.gov.uk
Vote of Thanks
A special vote of thanks and best wishes for the future is sent to Jim
Livesey for all his work on the EBRA Web Site. We
all thank Jim and hope that he and Eve enjoy living in sunny Spain.
Other issues
Bill reminded the meeting:
- Problems with late night or unacceptable noise from
licensed premises should be addressed to Environmental Health Licensing
at - ehl.safety@brighton-hove.gov.uk
- The Police should be notified if licensed premises
are seen retailing alcohol to intoxicated persons.
- Concerns with Street Clutter should be made to
Highways Officer Ian Denyer - ian.denyer@brighton-hove.gov.uk
- All problems re repairs to roads, signs, street
lights etc. report on www.fixmystreet.com
Finally Bill mentioned BARG – Brunswick and Adelaide
Residents Group. BARG
They are hoping to make local businesses aware that they trade in
Brunswick Town. An address no longer much used.
They wish to promote the address and hope that all businesses and
residents will use it. This way we will get back our
identity as a specific place. There is an old Council Plan for
Brunswick Town copies of which Bill will send you on
request. Have a look at the plan and add /amend etc. Return to Bill and
he will forward to The Council and ask that a
NEW plan is written and used as a basis for Brunswick Town in the
future.
NEW MEMBERSHIP - Please get people to join us
A vote of thanks was made to Gerald for allowing us to meet in The Iron
Duke.
There being no further business the meeting concluded at 12.30 pm.
