volunteered to fill the vacant post of Secretary on our Committee. Joan was
welcomed and voted in as Secretary.
1.BBQ.
Thanks were given to Rhondell for organising
the event. Thanks were also given to Peggy Thomas who organised the Cake Stall
and to The Old Market for allowing us to use their facilities. The event was a
success despite rain at the end of the afternoon. We made a profit of £537.32
after all expenses were paid.
There had been a complaint from a stall
holder who felt £20 was too expensive to rent a table for the day. This price
was set at our previous Committee Meeting where it was considered to be fair.
A separate meeting will be arranged to
discuss what we have learnt from this our first event.
PROFITS
Rhondell organised this event to raise money
to build a new flower bed and have the two Olive Trees planted in the ground.
These trees were funded from a collection we made last year. There was not
enough cash at that time to have them planted At present they reside in ceramic pots.
Bill suggested that a donation of £50 be
given to create a crocus bed in Norfolk Square. Reggie Vincent had been
generous to the Community Garden in its infancy and it was felt it would be
only fair to reciprocate. The crocus will be planted with the help of local
children. This is a way of getting them interested in the environment. All
present agreed with the suggestion.
A separate meeting is to be arranged with
Louise Rennison and others to discuss the future funding of the Community
Garden. EBRA will work with Louise to resolve the current financial problems.
As a Constituted Residents' Association we
can apply for garden funding from various sources. (as we have successfully
done in the past)
Bill announced that Messrs Corbettlee Estate
Agents are to pay for the installation of a Garden Bench in the Community
Garden. Full details will be announced later in the week.
Congratulations were given to Peggy and Bill
for reaching the finals of City in Bloom.
They will attend a ceremony at the
Metropole Hotel on September 3rd where the winners will be
announced.
Reports from Street
Representatives
Geraldine - Street
rep for Western Street
There have been concerns over speeding cars.
She is to enquire if speed restrictions can be enforced as there are in parts
of Kemp Town. A request has been made to
have more cycle stands installed in Western Street.
Cars have been parking on single yellow lines
restricting disabled access.
Eleanor - Street rep for Brunswick Street
East.
There are some noise problems which are
proving difficult to address. Some residents will not comment for fear of
intimidation from local businesses. Residents should have a contact number for
the police or environmental health rather than address the problems themselves.
Hassan - Street rep for Waterloo Street.
The Communal Bins are causing concern. Their
position keeps moving. The Council have
concerns over this and are investigating why the bins keep getting moved.
Rhondell - Street rep for Upper and Lower Market
Street.
The Conqueror continues to be a problem.
There are still people talking outside late at night.
There is some disregard for the law by
drinking beyond the pubs boundaries.
Farman Street
Bill reported in the absence of Richard. The
new bar on Western Road (5/6 Western Road Hove) is already causing noise
problems. They have been reported by the residents to EHL and Annie Sparks of
Environmental Health is on the case.
Michael - Neighborhood
Watch Waterloo Street and roads off.
A flat at 13 Waterloo Street is
known to be used by drug dealers but the police do not appear to be concerned.
This is being checked out by EBRA.
Two white youths have been seen acting
suspiciously. The police have been informed.
There is to be a meeting at Hove Town Hall to
discuss 'A Boards' and other street clutter.
Richard Gamper will attend this meeting and report back to us.
Bill told the meeting that he had asked Paul
Elgood about the plan to ban Estate Agents Boards in our Conservation Area.
This plan is with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister awaiting a decision.
Planning Appeal by The Old Market.
This appeal is based on the existing plans.
New plans will be submitted if this Appeal
fails. We will advise all if this happens.
There was no other business
The meeting closed at 1.00pm.
