What are we doing?

Community Garden

Peggy updated the meeting on the Waterloo Street Gardens. The £1,500 grant awarded by Serendipity has been spent and all monies accounted for. The grant has enabled the purchase of more plants, pots and seating for the gardens.  There is still work to do to further improve the gardens and any donations would be gratefully received.

Problems are still ongoing with the condition in which the gardens are left after functions at the Old Market.  Bill, Peggy and Louise Rennison are meeting with the management of the Old Market on Monday 4th February at 3:00pm to discuss the matter of removing cigarette ends from the gardens and the general lack of respect with which they are treated.
The point was made that the gardens are not owned by the Old Market and this will be reiterated at the meeting.

Richard mentioned that the city council are now monitoring licensed premises which do not sweep up cigarette butts left by their patrons, with a view to writing to them and pointing out their obligations.

The meeting proposed a vote of thanks to Bill, Peggy and of course Louise for all their hard work with the gardens.

Web site

Jim has now moved to Spain due to ill health and Wayne Schofields has offered to assume the role of Webmaster, which has been gratefully received.

Refuse and Street Cleaning

An update was provided on Farman Street in relation to the bin store that exists, despite no residents knowing why. Farman street rubbish used to be removed by City clean, but now residents must use communal bins so it was suggested the bin store could be removed. Richard Oxford will canvas residents to see if they approve of this action.

Other points concerning refuse; Embassy Court used to have its own bins but it now appears they are using communal bins on the streets.

The siting of the bin for Brunswick Street East seemed to be confusing since it would not benefit the residents and it was suggested that a more suitable site would be nearer the Old Market.

Bill will raise the issue of location of bins with Paul Elgood, and all residents have had a consultation document which they should respond to.

The Future of Brunswick Town

Richard and Bill met with city council officers including representatives of Licensing/Highways and City Clean, to discuss the future of Brunswick Town, which often seems to be neglected in documentation of plans for the city. The council agreed that the area had been overlooked, and mentioned that they are now more mindful of decisions which might affect the area. This has been a process which began with the EBRA – council meeting about one year ago, and EBRA’s canvassing of the council to keep Brunswick Town in mind. A separate set of minutes from this meeting will be distributed when available.

Licencing

In respect of concerns about licensing and the number of venues allowed to retail alcohol, it was mentioned that the city council will be presenting its plans for a cumulative impact zone at a licensing meeting on 14th February.

Brunswick Town Promotion

In conjunction with these meetings, residents have agreed that the Brunswick Town ‘brand’ should be more heavily promoted;

BARG – Brunswick Adelaide Residents Group are planning to re-brand themselves to include the Brunswick Town name.

Local businesses will be encouraged to form a Brunswick Town Business Association and interest in this has been expressed by Brices and I Gigi.

Speed Limits

Paul Elgood had updated on proposals for a 20mph speed limit in Waterloo Street that these are not actively supported by the police.

Bill pointed out that there is a lack of police liaison for EBRA and will seek to address this.

Finally, Bill asked if everyone had emailed Roger Dowty concerning Estate Agents boards. If not, he reminded them that they should do!

The meeting closed with setting the date for the AGM as the 1st March at 11:00am in the dining room of the Iron Duke Hotel.
