EBRA - East Brunswick Residents' Association |
Our Aims
We work for the benefit of all those who live and work in the area
from Brunswick Street East through to Norfolk Square and
Western Street, and between Western Road and the sea front.
We campaign vigorously for the preservation of our heritage and improvement of the environment
and amenities of the area. We present the views of our members to
Brighton & Hove City Council direct to the department concerned
or through our local councillors.
EBRA is committed to good community relations and equal opportunities and
is non-party and non-sectarian.

About Us
The Association was founded in 2005 to act as a forum for the views
of those who live and work in East Brunswick. EBRA is staffed on a
voluntary basis by people who live in the area. We are committed to
preserving and improving the unique atmosphere of our area.
Membership is open to all who live, work or run a business in
East Brunswick or just have an interest in our area. There is a small contribution of £5 per year
towards our running expenses. Persons on Income Support or Pension Credit
are not expected to pay.

Alcohol Licensing |
We are concerned at the proliferation of bars, clubs
and off-licenses, the extension of opening hours into the early morning, and the effect that has on our area.
We enable concerned residents to make objections by providing information on the objection process, standard forms and advice.
|
Roads and Traffic |
We constantly campaign to have the ineffective traffic-calming
scheme in Waterloo Street improved, to have our one-way systems looked at and enforced,
to get a 20mph limit for residential streets, to get the Council to consider weight
limits and repair roads that are badly damaged by traffic. |
Development and Planning |
New developments are affecting the character of our area.
We monitor all new planning applications and report them on this web site. We provide residents
with information on how they can object to an unsuitable planning application and make
their voices heard!

Cleaner Streets |
EBRA was responsible for getting communal
bins throughout East Brunswick and eliminating unsightly bin-bags and their
attendant seagulls from our streets. We persuaded many business to literally clean up their act.
We monitor the situation daily! |
Our Environment |
EBRA members have been responsible for introducing planters
and trees in East Brunswick. We are campaigning for more trees and greenery in our public places.
EBRA and its members help in the upkkeep of the Community Garden by The Old Market
(which is not maintained by The Old Market Trust) and work every year to keep Norfolk Square a pleasant
place. Members do the work, organised by EBRA and its members,
and planters, plants, seedings and bulbs are paid for from EBRA funds. |
A Boards and E Boards |
We want to get rid of unsightly Estate Agents' Boards, unlicensed street furniture
such as Advertising Boards and anything else that spoils our charming streets or inconveniences pedestrians.

Yes it does! EBRA has only been in existence since 2005 but in that
time our area has improved significantly. People tell is this is one of the nicest neighbourhoods
in a fine city. Property here is well sought-after so they must be right! We still have problems
that must be sorted out though and we will work with our dedicated
local councillors and Brighton & Hove City Council to keep on improving our area.
Roy Pennington former councillor for Regency ward said to us:
"...contacting someone in authority can make a change so long as someone, as such as a Residents
Association, reports the problem in the first place." Roy was right!
Paul Elgood councillor for Brunswick and Adelaide said this of
a recent successful campaign:
I am sure that the ongoing pressure from EBRA and from other residents has helped no end
to get this to this stage. So well done!" Thank you Paul!
EBRA will continue to work with our local councillors, the Council, the police
and others to make East Brunswick a better place to live and work. But we need your help!
Join EBRA right now and support our efforts.

A Motion to amend our Constitution was carried by a unanimous vote of the
members at the AGM held on 12 November 2006. One amendment opens membership to
those who live outside the EBRA area, but without voting rights. A second
amendment changes the composition of the Committee to reflect the way that EBRA operates.
In summary, what our constitution says is that EBRA should work for the benefit of all who live and work in our area, and that we shoud work to preserve the environment and amenities in the area. We must provide a forum for the views of the residents of this area (not just members).
In addition we must uphold equal opportunities and work for good relations amongst all members of the community, regardless of race, creed or colour, and we must be apolitical.
This website provides a forum where all who care to, can make their views known. But the website also reports news. EBRA does not always take a position on every topic reported here. If it does we will say so. A link where yon can make your views known is available on every page.
