Some Old News at 5-6 Western Road
|
This
information contained within this article was provided by Bob Bradshaw,
son of George Bradshaw, owner of Bradshaw cycles a previous owner of
5-6 Western Road.
Refering first to the picture at the head of
your piece. I was born in the room behind the top
floor left hand window. How about that?
No 6 Western Road started out as a New Hudson
company owned cycle store just after WW I. My Dad
worked for New Hudson Co and was asked to move from
Birmingham to manage this store, I believe some time
in the early 20's. I came along in 1924...so I am
pretty old now!
Soon after that my Dad had the opportunity to
buy the business and it became Bradshaw's, later
Bradshaws for Bicycles and finally George Bradshaw
(Sussex) Ltd
My Dad bought no 5 long before WW II and down
the passage to Farman Street on the right was a 5
story warehouse and on the right a neat wood
workshop on the left. He also owned a few of those
little houses. My Dad owned 8 cycles stores
eventually, in Eastbourne, Lewes, Newhaven and
Portslade. His motto was "I always have a thousand
cycles in stock. And he did!
I was so sad to read your story. The last time
I was "home" the premises were an Indian Restaurant.
A little seedy but none the less a business.
Your web site is great. I have viewed many of
your old stories. My wife (of 61 years) lived in
Furze Croft and I lived in 26 Wick Hall. Have been
to many wild parties in Embassy Court at the
beginning of WW II and just past the lagoon still
stands my old premises, Bradshaw Model Products, the
South Coast model railroad specialist!
In order the images are:
- 6 Western Road about 1930
- Bradshaw's at night pre war
- Farman Street. My Dad supplied bikes to the
nurses
- 1941 War bond raising with my Dad, the
mayor and Will Fyffe...a famous entertainer (then)
- My Dad invented the "silent milk cart" They
always had wooden wheels and at 5am or earlier they
woke everyone up. This was a great deal at the time. That's me pushing it aged 7, 1930
- A new neon sign, about 1952
- A magazine article about the old man
Thanks
Bob Bradshaw

EBRA and Farman street residents win the battle at 5/6 Western Road |
The Enforcement Notice on the owner of this property
has forced him to comply with the Planning Departments
demands that the building be altered to comply with
the regulations in the Brunswick Conservation Area. He
applied for and received the necessary Planning

The main points that EBRA asked for were:-
- The Ramp - which will now be removed and red brick pavers reinstated
- Entrance - The side door will be re-instated at its original position on the ground floor
- Windows - To be replaced front and rear with wooden sashes
- Lift - The lift shaft to be reduced in height to below the roof line
- Facade - Mouldings and featuresto be returned to previous glory
Many other conditions are contained in this approval,
a full list can be viewed on the council's Planning
site. Brighton and Hove council planning pages

Celebrating the Chimes |
"Celebrating the Chimes' Saturday 5th July 2008 was
the 180th birthday of St. Andrews, Waterloo Street. It
was marked by the reinstallation of the renovated
clock in the bell tower and a party in the church.
Ellie Sampson, Chair of the Friends of St. Andrews
Church welcomed many guests but the most outstanding
person there was without a doubt Bert Hodden who is
now 93 years old. He remembers a lot of the history of
the church having been a choirboy there, married there
and had his two children christened there.

Overseas Praise |
From the Mayor of East Brunswick, New Jersey USA
"I
have been fascinated and impressed by your website for the past few
years and have appreciated the sophisticated dialogue with your local
leadership regarding your concerns, and as the Mayor of East Brunswick,
New Jersey, USA, for the past twelve years I only wish our local
political discourse could be as civilized."
Mayor William.P.Neary
I am proud to share the information about East Brunswick Township with
you guys on the wrong side of the pond (note: American arrogance). We
have much to offer in our community and I hope it can be useful. We are
about 22.5 square miles, a population of 48,000, located about 45 miles
south of New York city, have 35 different houses of worship, a diverse
citizenry, a vibrant retail corridor, and numerous working farms
growing the best Jersey corn and tomatoes. I've been to London several
times, but never Brighton. You've peeked my interest.
Regards, Bill Neary

An aerial or dish is illegal in a Conservation Area if it is visible
from the street. Yet this was taken in the EBRA area on 29 August!
The council are charged with administering Planning Law, yet are doing nothing to stop this gradual downgrading of this CA! We call on Brighton &
Hove City Council to get something done about this.
You can help! Email planning enforcement using the link below. Just say "an aerial at [address]
is visible from the street. What do you intend to do about it?"
Down with Aerials!
By law they must reply so let's all do it. Let them know they must do their job!
But surely there's only a few of them. Wrong, there are hundreds, all illegal! |
Illegal Aerials!

|
 |
You guessed it, every one of these is illegal, some are even on listed buildings
and they look awful!
This is a Conservation Area and this is only a small sample. Why does our Council do nothing! Let's ask them!
